On Saturday, May 31, at 12 noon, Kentuckians for Single Payer Health Care will host a rally to demand the enactment of a publicly financed, national single payer program that would provide comprehensive coverage to everyone.  The event, initiated by National Single Payer, is a part of a National Day of Action to take place in 22 cities from Seattle to Charlotte and Detroit to Houston.

The purpose of the event is to lift the aspirations of the nation to end the unnecessary suffering and deaths from a failed health care system and make real the demand for the solution—removal of profit from health care and passage of Improved Medicare for All.  The United States, the only wealthy country without a universal plan, spends twice as much per person on health care as comparable countries.

Among the National Day of Action cosponsors are 16 Kentucky organizations:

  • Kentucky Poor Peoples Campaign
  • Kentuckians for the Commonwealth
  • Kentucky State AFL-CIO
  • Greater Louisville Central Labor Council
  • Kentucky Unitarian Universalist Justice Action Network
  • Louisville Showing up for Racial Justice
  • Derby City Coalition of Labor Union Women
  • United Auto Workers Local 862
  • Laborers Local 576
  • Kentucky Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression
  • Louisville Workers Brigade
  • Louisville Fellowship of Reconciliation
  • Kentucky Green Party Group
  • Kentuckiana Raging Grannies
  • League of Women Voters of Kentucky
  • Louisville DSA

The Louisville event will feature speakers Karen Krigger, MD, Professor of Family and Geriatric Medicine;  Dustin Reinstedler, President of the Kentucky AFL-CIO; and Hamza Jamal, UofL Medical Student. Also, the Kentuckiana Raging Grannies will perform.
