In yet another election showing that voters support a woman’s right to an abortion, Ohio voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment explicitly ensuring such rights.
As noted by the New York Times,
This citizen-sponsored measure would make Ohio the latest in a string of states to enshrine a right to abortion in its Constitution. A “yes” vote would amend the Constitution to give individuals the “right to make and carry out one’s own reproductive decisions,” including on abortion.
If the amendment passes, the state legislature could still ban abortion after the point when a fetus can survive outside the uterus — roughly 23 weeks — unless the patient’s “treating physician” deems it necessary to protect the patient’s life or health.
The amendment passed by about 500,000 votes (out of 3.8 million votes cast), 56.6% to 43.4%.
