The Sisters of Loretto and the Loretto Community will hold a public Lenten prayer service at noon on Wednesday, February 28, in front of Senator Mitch McConnell’s office at 601 West Broadway in Louisville.

The purpose of the event will be to pray for peace in Palestine and Israel, especially for civilians in Gaza who are suffering an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. Following the event, there will be a small-group meeting with an aide to Sen. McConnell.

Music for the event will be provided by the Mourning Choir, a Louisville community group formed in response to the violence in Palestine. Among the event’s speakers will be Dr. Farah Mokhtareizadeh, a community healthcare worker and member of the Louisville Ceasefire Coalition. Prayers offered will include a litany of mourning, a call to turn toward life, and prayers for peace.

From the press release: “The Loretto Community believes that bold, peaceful, prayerful action is an urgent and critical response to the unlawful and immoral killing of civilians in Gaza. While the action specifically is focused on support for Gaza, the Community believes that it’s possible to respond compassionately to the people of Israel and our U.S. Jewish friends/neighbors while also firmly opposing U.S. policy supporting Israel’s military response to the Oct. 7 attack.”
