After reviewing the voting plan proposed by the Jefferson County Board of Elections, the Kentucky BOE rejected the plan for the upcoming special election on February 21. The election is to choose a replacement for Morgan McGarvey’s seat in the Kentucky Senate representing Senate District 19.
The plan was rejected by the state board because it called for too few polling locations: two within the district and two outside the district.
With nearly 100,000 voters in the district, the plan was “insufficient” to meet the need, said Secretary of State Michael Adams, who chairs the state board.
When asked by Jefferson County clerk Bobbie Holsclaw if there had been complaints about the lack of polling locations, state board member Ben Chandler said that both Democrat and Republican state parties had sent letters of complaint.
The local board will now try to confirm more locations, including possibly working with Jefferson County Public Schools to use some schools as polling locations for the special election. The schools will be in session that day, though, unlike on normal election days, which will present extra challenges.
